Passive sign supports are designed to minimise the effects on vehicle occupants in the event of an impact. Designed to sit along the roadside these passive posts are tested and approved to BS-EN 12767 and are essential in retaining the integrity of our highways and surrounding infrastructure. They allow appropriate hazard warning signs, lighting solutions and directional signs to be safely installed across the globe. Made in either aluminium, steel or GRP, passive support posts can have high-energy, low-energy and non-energy absorbing qualities and we can provide guidance as to which products are the most suitable on any strategic or local authority road.
The HiMast™ passive post is recognised across the industry due to its frangible design, non-energy absorbing qualities and the wide range of sizes within the portfolio, allowing for installation along any highway. Developed by Varley & Gulliver the HiMast™ provides an alternative to the traditional structural steel poles that are protected by safety barrier. HiMast™ is designed to breakaway following a vehicle impact to minimise the harm to the vehicles occupants. HiMast™ doesn’t require protection by safety barrier thus offering a significant cost saving.
The Optimast achieves high safety accreditations including 100 NE2 and 100 NE3. They are becoming common place across the industry and following more than two years’ in development the approval of single and multi-legged designs to BS-EN 12767 has been successfully completed.
Low-Energy and High-Energy Absorbing
With the full range of energy absorbing passive posts, including the Jerol and Lattix solutions, durable safety critical products are available as viable alternatives when the standard passive post isn’t suitable. Jerol passive posts are manufactured in Sweden from glass fibre composite which has a service life exceeding 60 years. In an impact scenario the vehicle is brought to a halt gradually due to the design of the product, maintaining occupant safety. The slotting and stretching procedure is directly responsible for the energy absorption properties of Lattix which allows the post to progressively crumple upon impact before shearing at specially designed points on the footplate.
Mallatite have a range of non-energy, low-energy and high-energy absorbing passively safe posts called: Jerol, Lattix and Optimast.
The Lattix range are fully tested to BS EN 12767 and has achieved a classification of 100NE:2.
The Lattix range is inclusive of 4 different sizes which offers different wind capacities and strengths. This means they can be installed almost anywhere in the world!

Tested to BS EN 12767, the Optimast achieved the highest safety accreditation of 100 NE3.
The Optimast range is a round aluminium extrusion and offers mast dimensions of 127mm, 168mm, 219mm and 42mm. Standard fixing diameters and post caps can still be used to offer further cost savings!
All our passively safe posts can be powder coated in a variety of colours; they can be integrated to compliment any location.
Manufactured from glass fibre composite the Jerol posts are compliant to BS EN 12767. They also comply with wind load classification and deflection criteria contained in BS EN12899-1.
Jerol posts offer both non-energy and high-energy absorbing qualities. They come in a variety of diameters, including:114, 140, 168, 219 and 273mm.
Varley & Gulliver's range is inclusive of non-energy absorbing posts that are supplied internationally. They are called, HiMast.
